The race begins at the beautiful Praia do Pontal in Recreio dos Bandeirantes. This quieter, picturesque area provides a peaceful start with ocean views and a calm atmosphere to ease runners into their stride.
Kilometer 0-10: Barra da Tijuca
The course winds through the expansive and modern neighbourhoods of Barra da Tijuca. Expect wide roads and a flat terrain as you pass luxury apartments and the famous Barra Beach, Rio’s longest stretch of sand.

This section offers uninterrupted coastal views as you run through Reserva Beach. It’s a serene stretch, surrounded by natural vegetation and the sounds of the waves.
Kilometer 20-30: Sao Conrado
The route transitions inland, leading runners through Sao Conrado. Here, you’ll experience some rolling hills, including the challenge of the Elevado do Joa – a stunning elevated highway that offers sweeping views of the ocean and the city below.
Kilometer 30-35: Leblon and Ipanema
As you approach the iconic neighbourhoods of Leblon and Ipanema, the race reaches its most vibrant sections. You’ll run along the famous beaches lined with cheering crowds, lively music, and the postcard-perfect scenery of Rio.
Kilometer 35-40: Copacabana
The energy peaks as you hit the legendary Copacabana Beach. This flat and lively stretch is filled with spectators and is a boost of motivation as you near the finish.
Kilometer 40-42.2: Flamengo and Aterro do Flamengo
The final kilometers lead you to Flamengo Park, a verdant space with wide, flat roads. The finish line awaits at the Monument to the Dead of World War II (Monumento aos Pracinhas), where you;ll celebrate your incredible achievement surrounded by the beauty of Guanabara Bay.

What do I need to travel to Rio de Janerio?
You will need a current New Zealand Passport to travel overseas, with a validity of six months or more after the date upon which you are scheduled to arrive back in New Zealand.
Do I need travel insurance?
It is compulsory that each person has travel insurance before travelling with Marathon Tours. Although it isn’t compulsory that it’s purchased via Allianz Global Assistance (our preferred provider), we do highly recommend it, as unlike other companies, they provide cover for the actual marathon event. We recommend you take out insurance as soon as you book, as it will ensure you are covered in case you injure yourself prior to the event and can no longer travel.
Are flights included?
As we find most of our clients make the most of their time while in this part of the world, flights aren't automatically included in this package. This provides you with the opportunity to customise your travel plans with Marathon Tours. Being a fully bonded travel agency we can assist you with all your travel requirements including flights, additional tours or providing personal recommendations from our experienced team.
How do I book?
Simply click on the yellow contact us link displayed at the top of the page or phone the team on 0800 RUNNING. Should the upcoming event already be sold out talk to us about joining our contact list for the following year.
