Course Outline:
The race begins in the stunning Paro Valley, surrounded by terraced fields, rivers, and traditional Bhutanese villages. This region is known for its dramatic Himalayan backdrop and serene atmosphere.
Early Miles – Scenic Valley Running
Runners follow mixed terrain through rural Paro:
- Gentle undulations along the valley floor
- Trails and mountain paths are interwoven with short road sections
- Views of sub‑alpine forests, farmland, and high ridgelines
The marathon route is mostly off-road, with terrain that is achievable but challenging due to altitude and elevation change.
Iconic Cultural Landmarks
The course highlights Bhutan’s cultural heritage, taking runners past several spiritual and architectural marvels, including:
- Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong) – The fortress‑monastery overlooking the valley
- Chorten (religious shrines) are scattered throughout the countryside
- Views toward the famed Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang), perched high above the valley
These landmarks bring an unforgettable cultural dimension to the race, making each section feel like both a pilgrimage and an athletic challenge.
Mid‑Course – Mountain Trails & Climbs
The marathon includes:
- Three significant climbs throughout the route
- Elevation ranging between 2,200m and 2,530m
- A total ascent of ~1500m, making the course demanding at altitude
While none of the climbs are technically difficult, the high elevation amplifies the effort required.
Late Stage – Rural Village Paths & Valley Descent
After the major climbs, the course folds back through traditional Bhutanese villages:
- Narrow village paths
- Forest edges and riverbank trails
- Local spectators and monks offering encouragement
This section reconnects runners with the cultural heartbeat of Bhutan.
Finish – Return to Paro
The marathon concludes back in the Paro Valley, where runners complete their journey in the shadow of sacred mountains and ancient architecture – a finish line that feels as spiritual as it is athletic.
