Where: Rarotonga in the Cook Islands
Held in September each year in beautiful Rarotonga, this week is totally geared for the South Pacific holiday maker with a running addiction!
The main event is the 32km round island road race, but if you’re not up for that – choose from other events like the Local Fun Run, Hash House Harriers Birthday run, Round Rock teams relay, or the totally mad Nutters Cross Island Run …which starts from the site of the Royal Takitumu Hilton Resort and heads over mountain ridges, across rugged valleys and riverbeds down to the Avatiu Coastline. This particular run however, is not for the fainthearted and with the record still unbeaten at 45 minutes, promises to be an exciting challenge and a great spectator event.
About the Destination
This beautiful island is a small gem in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with long, white sandy beaches, and lush interior forests. There is plenty to do here and swimming, snorkelling, deep-sea fishing, and hiking make the top of the list. If these activities are too much after a week of running, you can pick your favourite palm tree on the beach and enjoy a hard-earned tropical drink. Whatever you do, you shouldn’t miss Wigmore Falls (Papua Falls) or the ancient marae, Arai te Tonga. The pace is relaxed, the people are friendly, and the scenery cannot be beat.
