Last year runners celebrated the 2,500 year anniversary of the first 42.195 km run by the Greek messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens. This year marks the beginning of the next 2,500 years of marathon running. Participating in the Athens Classic Marathon is a highlight for many because of the historical significance and the feeling of being part of something time honoured and tradition bound. Runners will also appreciate the considerable personal challenge this course offers, which includes a series of uphill slopes and steep descents.

About the Destination
After completing this historic marathon, why not continue your history lessons with a visit to the Panathenaic Stadium, the site of the 1st modern Olympic Games in 1896. This stadium was reconstructed from ancient remains and is the only stadium in the world made entirely of white marble. In keeping with the theme, your stay in Athens will be similar to walking through the pages of a history book and nowhere will this feel truer than at the Temple of the Olympian Zeus. The remains that stand today hint at the once grand edifice built 1,500 years ago to honour the Greek God.
